2008 Mercedes CLK63 AMG Black Series

Mercedes’ Racing program had decided to enter the European DTM Series, aiming at the 2008/2009 season.  In order to legally enter, a manufacturer must “homologate” a chassis which means it must show the officials that the race car stems from a production car, not just a prototype.  Per the rules, the minimum homologation production is 500 units, worldwide.

Thus came the CLK63 AMG Black Series.  Produced in a limited run of only approximately 500 units, the Black Series cars were very, very special.  They incorporated AMG’s normally aspirated 6.3L V8 (actually 6.2L, but marketing was harping on the famous past 6.3’s) which produced 510hp!  This was a hand-built engine designed for the rigors of racing.  The Black Series cars also included special 6 piston front brakes, 4 piston rears with cross-drilled, vented rotors front and back.  There was a special Black Series-only monoblock forged rim, special DTM-inspired flared front/rear fenders, special flared rockers, a rear carbon fiber diffuser, rear limited slip differential cooling system, and a special front bumper incorporating carbon air vents and an integrated splitter.  Finally, there was a rear trunk spoiler only seen on the Black Series cars.

Inside, the car had the rear seat deleted, Black Series sport bucket seats, special AMG-style paddle shifting system with upgraded shift software, adjustable suspension, and a Black Series only DTM-inspired sport steering wheel with a flat bottom.  These cars were offered in Black, Silver, Red, and White.  Special ordered colors included several cars that were paint to sample.  Black and Silver were the most common colors with nearly 85% of all cars in these two colors.

#553 is one of the last AMG Black Series cars produced for 2008.  It is one of only 349 CLK63 AMG Black Series cars brought into the U.S. and one of only 34 white cars in the country!!!   With only 14,600 original miles, it is a stunning example of an exceedingly rare Mercedes.  Accented with removable carbon on the side mirrors and several trim pieces inside, it is otherwise completely stock and original.
